To add 47 + 38, split the second number: 47 + 30 = 77, then 77 + 8 = 85. Much faster than column addition in the head — and works for any two-digit pair.

What's 5 × 8? Think 10 × 8 = 80, then halve it: 40. This single trick handles the entire 5-times table once your child knows the 10s. Works for any number.
